Gem Spotlight - Humaira Mehboob at Settlement Council of Australia
Humaira joined the Settlement Council of Australia as their Communications Lead just over six months ago. Here she shares her passion for storytelling, commitment to creating change and her lifelong desire to work in the development sector.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a dedicated communications professional with over 14 years of experience in humanitarian and development aid, primarily in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
My career began in 2009 with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Pakistan, my birth country, where I worked on programs for refugees, displaced populations, and asylum seekers. Over the years, I've gained extensive experience in communications and donor relations, focusing on advocating for vulnerable groups and managing key stakeholder relationships.
Most recently, I joined the Settlement Council of Australia, where I lead the communications portfolio, shaping strategic messaging and advancing the organisation’s mission within Australia.
Where is your favourite or dream holiday destination?
Turkey is one of my favourite countries in the world, and it's a place that holds a special place in my heart. I’ve already had the privilege of experiencing its rich history and culture, but my dream is to one day retire in the historic city of Istanbul in a small house near the Hagia Sophia, surrounded by its centuries-old beauty and the sufi soul of the city.
What did you dream of being when you were a child?
From a young age, I knew I wanted to work in the development sector. I was deeply influenced by my father, a demographer and bureaucrat, who played a key role in shaping demographic studies in Pakistan. While I wasn't initially sure about the specific path I would take, I always had a passion for storytelling and wanted to use it to make a meaningful impact. The development sector felt like a natural fit, where I could combine my desire to write with my commitment to creating positive change.
What was your very first job?
My very first job was as an intern with Oxfam GB, where I gained an understanding of development aid. However, my first paid job was with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). There, I began working in External Relations, which laid the foundation for my career in communications for development.
What’s the best thing about your current role?
The best thing about my current role is the opportunity to work alongside a talented and inspiring manager who truly values my professional growth. I'm fortunate to be in an environment at the Settlement Council of Australia (SCOA) where continuous learning and skill development are encouraged. The support and mentorship from the CEO play a key role in fostering my personal and professional growth, making this an exciting and rewarding place to be.
What is the best career advice you’ve received? / What is the key career advice you give to others?
The best career advice I received early on was to focus on continuous development and growth. I was encouraged to view each role as a stepping stone to where I want to go and who I want to become. I have also learned to embrace new beginnings, as life often takes unexpected paths.
My advice for my peers is to face these challenges head-on, learning from each experience and mastering the skills needed to navigate them successfully.
Thank you for sharing with us, Humaira!
