New Year’s resolutions... Is a new job on your list?

There’s no doubt about it, 2020 was a challenging, interesting, rollercoaster-of-emotions kind of year. Throughout this pandemic and periods of lockdown, some have lost their jobs, others have accepted new roles and others have had the time to stop, reflect and realise it is time for a new opportunity.

Whether you’re looking for that next step in your career or transitioning to a completely new career or industry, here are some tips that will help you prepare for your job search in the new year.

What are you looking for?

Take the time to reflect and put some thought into this. Here are a few questions to help guide you…

  • Why do you want to leave your current job?

  • What do you enjoy doing?

  • What is important to you?
Career progression and development, type of organisation and cause, team culture.

  • Do you need any further learning or development to get where you want to go?

  • And some of the practical things…
Location, remuneration, working from home arrangements, travel expectations, etc.

Work on your Resume and Cover Letters

It’s important to have an updated resume that makes you stand out (for the right reasons). Equally important is a great cover letter (that is always tailored to the job you’re applying for). Your resume and cover letter help get you an interview, so it’s worth the time to get them right. We’ve written an article that may be helpful: How to prepare a standout CV / Resume.

Leverage LinkedIn

LinkedIn is an extremely valuable tool in your job search. You’ll often learn about new opportunities from your LinkedIn network (that may or may not be advertised), and recruiters and hiring managers will view your profile and reach out to you via LinkedIn. So make sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date, build a network and stay active on this platform.

Network, network, network

Many jobs are recruited through the “hidden job market”, so not advertised. It is definitely advised to go beyond traditional and advertised job-search methods and leverage your network. More on that here: How to find new opportunities in the NFP Sector.

Target your search & narrow your focus

Job searching and preparing applications takes time and effort, so use your time wisely and keep focused. Only apply for jobs that are relevant and aligned with your skillset and what you want (this is where that first tip becomes very helpful!). When applying, ask yourself…

Is this the right fit for me? (now and longer term)

Am I right for the role and organisation?

Do I meet the job requirements and selection criteria?

Get interview ready

For any meeting, preparation is key. Interviews are no different. Here’s an article that help you get interview ready: How to Present at Interview. And other one: A simple interview question, “Can you tell us about yourself?”
