Gem Spotlight - marlo newton at the alfred foundation
Marlo Newton has been settled into her new role for a little while now, so we caught up with her to see how everything was going and to learn more about her interests and start in the non-profit world.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a career fundraiser currently working in major gifts at The Alfred Foundation. My team is responsible for all Philanthropy ie. major gifts, trusts and bequests. I have a mixed background in education and fundraising, with a passionate interest in history and English literature.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I am involved as a volunteer with two community organisations, including one role as a Board member. I enjoy giving some of my time to the cause of empowering women and making sure they have a voice.
What’s the best thing about your current role?
The best thing about my current role is that The Alfred is a cause I can wholly support. The combination of The Alfred as a public hospital which serves every single person in the state, with its centres of excellence and clinical trials breaking new ground in treatment in so many areas means that I have a continual source of inspiration and admiration to fuel my work. In addition, I am surrounded by an excellent team at The Alfred Foundation.
What motivated you to move into or start in the “for purpose” sector?
Like so many of us, I ‘fell’ into fundraising while believing that I would be mainly involved in marketing and event management. Thankfully a skilled manager taught me more about fundraising than I knew and I found that I enjoyed the mutual joy of matching people with purpose.
What is another profession that you think would be cool to work in, but possibly never would?
If I wasn’t a fundraiser? You’d find me on a stage, in a play or a musical! Song 8 Dance 3!!
Thanks for being a Gem Spotlight, Marlo!
