Gem Spotlight - Mary Chackola at philanthropy australia
Mary was hired as Philanthropy Australia’s National Engagement Manager for VIC/TAS in early 2023. Here we learn more about Mary’s passion for marketing and fundraising and her journey to this current role and how she contributes towards positive and meaningful change.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a passionate marketing and fundraising professional with more than a decade of experience in growth management spanning across a broad range of industries including retail, entertainment, NFP and philanthropy in Australia and the UK.
I began my career in commercial brand and marketing roles but found my true passion in the for-purpose sector when I joined the team at Cancer Council Victoria in 2016. I very much enjoyed the opportunity to leverage my skills for an organisation committed to meaningful purpose driven work.
What was your very first job?
I became a cashier at my local Woolworths supermarket when I was 15 and ended up staying with the organisation throughout high school and university. After I graduated, I was offered a placement on the Woolworths Buying & Marketing graduate program.
What’s the best thing about your current role?
In my current role at Philanthropy Australia, the most rewarding aspect is contributing to a peak body dedicated to fostering a more generous and inclusive Australia through the transformative power of philanthropy. I take great satisfaction in facilitating valuable networking opportunities, sharing best practices, and shifting perspectives on crucial issues within the philanthropic sector to enable not-for-profits to amplify their impact.
Your profession can be hard. How do you stay focused, motivated, and driven?
I stay focused and motivated by the tangible results of my work and the positive impact it has on the stakeholders I engage, both internal and external. Knowing that my efforts contribute to meaningful change keeps me grounded and driven, even during challenging times.
What is the best career advice you’ve received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to work with people who not only inspire you but also challenge you to grow. Early in my career, I had the privilege of working under a leader who became a mentor. Their belief in my potential and their encouragement to step outside my comfort zone were instrumental in my professional growth. I’ve learned to embrace challenges and seek opportunities that stretch my abilities, which has been invaluable in my career journey.
Thanks, Mary, for letting us learn more about you!
