Applying for Roles

Applying for Roles

When you’re looking for your next role, it’s important to take some time to consider the reason for your move - is it the right time and if you’re looking to move laterally or considering changing sectors. Be confident of your reasons as most potential employers will ask about the reasons for this.

Below are some things to think about as you prepare to apply for your next role and the interview process.

1. Updating your resume and cover letter:

  • Highlight especially your relevant skills, experience, and qualifications for the role.

  • Customise your cover letter for each application, explain why you are interested in the role you’re applying for and demonstrate how your skills align with the position. Highlight some transferable skills you feel can be put towards a new position (from what you’re currently doing) or a new industry.

  • Highlight some of your key achievements.

  • Explain how you can contribute to the organisation.

2. Research the Company:

  • Do some research about the company, its values, culture, what they do and who they work with.

  • Understand the role you are applying for and how it fits into the company's structure and goals.

3. Application Process & Interview Preparation:

  • Be patient and wait for a response. If a specific timeframe is mentioned in the job posting, respect that timeline.

  • If you are shortlisted for an interview, prepare by researching common interview questions and rehearsing your responses.

  • Prepare examples that showcase your skills and accomplishments related to the role.

4. Interview Process:

  • Dress appropriately and be ready to articulate your interest in the position and why you are a good fit.

  • Be on time and demonstrate professionalism and enthusiasm.

  • Answer questions clearly and concisely and ask relevant questions about the role and the company. Show your interest and passion for the opportunity.

5. References:

  • Provide referees who can vouch for your skills and qualifications.

  • Inform your referees in advance, seeking their permission to share their contact details with potential employers.
