Gem Spotlight - Lisa Krishtul at Gembridge
Lisa recently joined Team Gembridge as a Senior Recruitment Consultant. Here we learn about her extensive travels, her love of shopping, what prompted her move into the NFP sector and how a manager’s comment gave her the confidence to shine.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I was born in Hawaii, grew up in Adelaide, went to University in Sydney, had a gap year in Los Angeles, and met my husband and started a family here in Melbourne.
I did a lot of independent travel before meeting my husband and starting a little family. Having majored in Anthropology at University (along with Law), I was always drawn to the more exotic, colourful cultures. Travels in my younger years included visits to India, The Middle East, North, South and Central Americas, Asia and Europe. When my kids are a little older, I am keen to continue learning through travel – appreciating the diversity and beauty our planet offers, and passing this passion on to my kids in the process.
If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be?
Probably shopping, either in a mall or out and about thrifting. Shopping is my happy place. I love just wandering whilst looking for treasure, finding a bargain and finding pieces that tell a side of who I am. Fashion is an expression of personality, and I love how what you wear can change how you feel and tell different stories about yourself.
Where is your favourite or dream holiday destination?
My favourite destination to date would have to be Guatemala. I was chasing the colours and vibrancy of Mexico, but rather fell in love with the people and energy of neighbouring Guatemala. My favourite spot on the trip was Lake Atitlan, where I took Spanish lessons and felt I could stay for an eternity.
My next dream destination would have to be a trip to Italy and Greece. I am particularly keen to visit the Greek Islands. This is on top of my bucket list!
What did you dream of being when you were a child?
A lawyer. I wanted to grow up in my father’s footsteps. But the more I learnt about law and the legal system, the less I felt it was the right career choice for me.
What motivated you to move into or start in the “for purpose” sector?
My career to date has centred around Sales roles, selling product. Upon reflecting, I realised what kept me in these roles was the relationship management and new business development, understanding businesses and helping them flourish with suggestions and tips, not selling product.
After having children, my priorities changed, and I realised I wanted to use my skill set, drive and ambition to do good and create lasting impact. I started working in a NFP in a Fundraising role and have now found myself in recruitment. I am excited to share my passion for the sector with others, and help find Gem candidates to help strengthen organisation’s mission and purpose, with top talent propelling them forward in their goals.
What is the best career advice you’ve received?
My recent manager gave me the confidence to shine in my last role by saying, “I give you permission to make mistakes, that’s how you learn”. It was a golden moment to instantly trust in myself, be confident in my ability since failing was okay, and was a pivotal moment when I rose up in the role and made it my own.
What is the key career advice you give to others?
It’s better to try than have regrets... Consider what’s the worst that could happen with any decision and weigh that up with how much you seek to gain!
Welcome to Team Gembridge, Lisa!
