Gem Spotlight - malu fabello at gembridge
Malu Fabello joined Team Gembridge in January 2024. Her most recent role was leading recruitment projects for senior roles within various sectors including Health, Government and NFP. Below, we learn more about Malu and a bit about the experiences that shape who she is today.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I dedicated over a decade of my career to serving the Brazilian Government. A twist of fate brought me to Australia for a four-month assignment, during which I not only developed a deep appreciation for the country, but also met my now-husband… my life changed in more ways than I could have imagined.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about traveling. Through travel, I embrace new challenges and step out of my comfort zone. It's more than seeing beautiful places and trying exotic flavours; it’s about immersing in a different culture, forging connections with incredible individuals, cultivating empathy, revisiting beliefs – it’s my journey of self-discovery and mostly, an opportunity to improve myself.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy taking my dog to the beach, spending time with my family, going to the theatre, or reading a good book with a glass of wine.
What is your favourite movie, TV show or book?
I recently read Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, and it was cathartic.
My favourite movies include The Silence by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, 2046 by Wong Kar-wai, and City of God by Fernando Meirelles.
A TV Show that warms my heart and brings a smile to my face is Love on the Spectrum.
If you could invite 3 guests to dinner, who would they be?
Dead or alive? I would invite my late grandfather who departed when I was 15 years old, another victim of violence. I would also invite Lou Salomé and Frida Kahlo.
What’s the best thing about your current role?
The ability to connect with remarkable individuals and help candidates and clients to realise their purposes. It's immensely rewarding to play a role, albeit a small one, that positively impacts our community.
Recruitment can be hard. How do you stay focused, motivated, and driven?
Keeping my focus on the broader perspective and recognising the value our clients and candidates add to the causes they represent. Their commitment and genuine passion are inspirational.
What motivated you to move into or start in the “for purpose” sector?
I come from a beautiful, colourful and vibrant country, but also a country marked by severe wealth inequality, escalating violence against women, and the unfortunate distinction of having the highest rate of LGBTQI+ murders globally. I am quite grateful for the life and opportunities I had growing up and still have. So, being able to contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate society is extremely fulfilling.
What is the best career advice you’ve received?
The best career advice I've received, applicable also to life in general, is to do your best. Understand that mistakes are part of learning and improvement processes. Set boundaries - learn to say no.
Thanks so much for sharing with us, Malu! And welcome to Team Gembridge.
